Charlie Melancon’s “Canada First” Tour

(Metairie, La) – What do candidates for U.S. Senate do when they fail to gain support in the state they’re running? Some drop out, most get desperate, but it looks like Charlie Melancon came up with a new desperate strategy – ask Canada.

Did Charlie Melancon go to Canada to attend the Association of Trial Lawyers of America convention in Vancouver this weekend? This is the organization that is coaching fellow trial lawyers on how to get rich off the oil spill. The front page of their website has an oiled bird with a link to “learn more.” http://www.justice.org/cps/rde/xchg/justice/hs.xsl/default.htm

“The ‘Canada First’ tour must not have sounded quite as nice for the Melancon campaign kick-off,” Luke Bolar, spokesman for David Vitter for U.S. Senate said. “It looks like Melancon went up to Canada to raise campaign contributions from trial lawyers who will be retiring off of Louisiana families. If that’s the case, I’m sure Melancon’s constituents want to know why he was meeting with trial lawyers in Canada instead of Louisianians first.”

In addition to Sen. David Vitter’s bill that eliminates all liability caps on BP for the oil spill, he recently introduced an amendment in a Senate Environment Committee hearing to cap attorney’s fees at five percent to make sure that Louisiana families get the money from their claims, not trial lawyers.
