After deliberating for almost four hours, the Jefferson Parish Republican Party announced its favored candidates today for Congress, lieutenant governor, Harahan City Council and mayor, the Jefferson Parish School Board and parish president.
While most incumbent Republicans got the party's nod, one surprise was its choice of newcomer Sandy Denapolis for the School Board's 9th District, said Marie Clesi, the Jefferson GOP executive committee's secretary. She is running against Gene Katsanis, who is seeking reelection.
Sen. David Vitter, and Reps. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, and Joseph Cao, R-New Orleans, picked up endorsements for their reelection bids during the GOP meeting Tuesday night. The Jefferson GOP endorsed Hunt Downer, R-Terrebonne, a former speaker of the state House of Representatives, to succeed Rep. Charlie Melancon in the 3rd Congressional District. Melancon, D-Napoleonville, is running against Vitter for the Senate.
