Vitter vs. Melancon: Documented Votes
Immigration David Vitter has been a leader on immigration reform since his election to the U.S. Senate. As Chairman of the U.S. Senate Border Security and Enforcement First Immigration Caucus, David Vitter supports the rights of states like Arizona to protect their own borders, he has consistently opposed taxpayer benefits going to illegals, and has voted to give employers the tools and responsibility to verify legal status. Charlie Melancon has a troubling record on immigration reform. He has voted against stopping taxpayer benefits from going to illegals and has made it harder for Louisiana law enforcement to arrest and detain them. When asked to grade the President, Melancon has given President Obama an "A" grade. Oil Spill and the Moratorium As soon as BP's Deepwater Horizon rig blew-up in the Gulf, David Vitter went into action by setting up a Hotline for victims and introducing legislation to force BP to pay for all damages, without limit. He has also been Obama's staunchest opponent on the job-killing drilling moratorium. On the other hand, Charlie Melancon believes the oil spill has been "overplayed." He's requested the President not be criticized for the drilling moratorium and Melancon skipped a crucial committee hearing where he could have grilled BP's President over unsafe drilling practices and compensation for victims. Just a few weeks ago, he attended a fundraiser in Canada with the trial lawyers association, where they were meeting on how to get rich off of the oil spill. Protecting Life On issues of life, nobody has been stronger than David Vitter. He has authored legislation to prevent taxpayer funding of abortions and has received perfect ratings from the National Right to Life Committee. Charlie Melancon has received scores as low as 42 from the National Right to Life Committee and is flatly opposed to repealing Obamacare even though it provides for taxpayer funding of abortion. Spending David Vitter has voted against every bailout and the Obama stimulus package. He also voted against Obama's massive budget that doubles the national debt in five years and triples it in ten. Charlie Melancon has voted lock-step with the Obama Administration on every significant spending increase. Whether it was the Wall Street bailout, twice, the Obama Stimulus package, or Obama's massive budget that doubles our mountain of debt, Charlie Melancon's voting record is clear: he thinks growing the size of the government and increasing our debt will solve the nation's problems. Health care When the health care debate was in full fource last summer, David Vitter held over 24 town halls across Louisiana to listen to your concerns. David Vitter has been at the forefront of trying to repeal Obama's disastrous health care law by introducing legislation to do just that. Charlie Melancon's record on health care law is clear. He is opposed to repealing Obama's health care law and when given the chance to kill the government takeover of the plan, he voted against Louisiana families.
